We offer this stunning and rare antique Chinese Yixing teapot with incised character mark designs and with integral removable diffuser and lid, and believed to date from the 18th or early 19th century. This finely made red clay teapot is of cylindrical shape with molded banding around the top and base of the teapot and with a slightly recessed base with a short straight pouring spout and simple loop handle. The teapot has purpose made removable strainer with a recessed cover.
The body of the teapot is decorated with incised character marks and designs repeated around the body. Experts have shareed that the characters are not current Chinese script, but a more ancient script. One denotes “light” or morning, the other “dark” or night. Also note the pattern around the body, repeated as well on the lid. See also the flowing scroll designs applied to the edge of the strainer. The lid has a small shaped scroll handle and has an impressed artist mark within the lid, with a six character mark impressed to the base of the teapot within an ornate border. The design and style is typical 18th century.
Condition
Excellent original condition without restoration. The strainer was apparently broken and glued by a previous owner. No other chips or cracks.
